A laser scanner collects hundreds of thousands of closely spaced surface geometry measurements (points) with high accuracy in just minutes. These surface points form a ‘point cloud’ that, when displayed in CAD software or 3D viewers, creates a dense 3D bitmap image of the project site. Unlike a traditional image, each scanned point contains true X, Y and Z coordinates, allowing the dataset to be interrogated for measurements, modelling and detailed site analysis. This spatial data provides a rich understanding of existing conditions and helps drive informed decisions across planning and design phases.
